When You Go Out on the Town Tonight... When you get ready to go out "trick or treating" in Churchill (the "polar bear capital of the world"), there are some costume no-nos. Halloween falls in the middle of the polar bears' annual migration onto the ice of Hudson Bay, and the Halloween Polar Alert is in effect tonight. A perimiter is set up around the town of approximately 1000 people and the area will be patrolled by police and Canadian Rangers. Fire trucks, ambulances and other vehicles cruise the streets with spotlights to give kids a safe time to trick or treat, and a helicopter circles overhead with the crew ready to use tranquilizer darts if a bear should invade the fun. So animal costumes are definately out - predator or prey! If you dress up like a polar bear, you may set off a false alarm or get one of those darts in your backside. Dressing up like a seal might attract hungry bears looking for a yummy treat too - YOU!
