Fifth Largest Island in the World Named for William Baffin (1584?-1622), Baffin Island (now part of Nunavut and next to Baffin Bay) is the fifth-largest island in the world. With an area of about 476,000 sq. km / 183,800 square miles, and only about 10,000 people (mostly Inuit groups) scattered across the island, it is one of the most sparsely populated areas in the world. (Compare that with the similarly sized country of Morocco - and its population of over 32,000,000!) Much of the treeless island - and the waters around it - are protected national parks. The vast, unspoiled tundra, the mountainous interior and the hundreds of bays and fjords of the rugged northern coast make Baffin Island a perfect destination for adventure travellers.
