30,000 People - 15,000 Polar Bears The territory of Nunavut (which means "our land" in the Inuktitut language) covers some 1.9 million square kilometres / 750,000 square miles of the Canadian Arctic and is nearly one-fifth the size of Canada. With a total population of only about 30,000 people, Nunavut has a population density of one person per 63 sq. km / 23 sq. miles. By comparison, Mexico (with a similar area and a population of over 105,000,000) would have about 3,500 people occupying the same space. And then there's the polar bears ... Canada has an estimated* population of about 15,000 polar bears (most of which are in Nunavut). With about one bear for every two people in the territory, it's no wonder Nunavut has a polar bear on its license plate! *They refused to participate in the last census.
