 He Who Runs Swifter Than a Reindeer The Evenki people number about 30,000 and occupy a huge territory in north eastern Siberia. The name means "he who runs swifter than a reindeer". Traditional Evenki clothing was designed for the cold dry Arctic climate, the nomadic way of life, and travel on foot or skis. Winter clothing was made from reindeer and moose skins. Soft newborn reindeer skins were used for loincloths that were worn with reindeer skin leggings and thigh-high boots. This combination provided ideal protection from the snow. Parkas were open in front and had pleats at the back so that they would hang comfortably when riding a reindeer, and all of this might be topped with close fitting reindeer caps that often had the reindeer ears left in place! An Evenki shaman's clothing was more elaborate in decoration, and was often adorned with many symbolic references to flight, such as metal pendants and tassels made with bird wings and tails (picture).
