Scientists discover arrowhead in 5,300 year old body
In 1991, two German mountaineers found a frozen body in a glacier - high in the Alps on the Italian-Austrian border.
The body was that of a Bronze Age hunter and it is about 5,300 years old - the oldest mummy ever discovered!
Scientists have finally solved the mystery of what killed the "Iceman". Somebody shot him in the back with an arrow.
An arrowhead was found under his left shoulder. The path of the arrow had been traced on the Iceman's bones.
The man has been named Ötzi by the Austrians, and he was about 45 when he died. His frozen body was found with all of his belongings: leather clothing and boots, fur hat, quiver with flint tipped arrows, copper headed axe, and wood and flint used to start fires.
The superbly preserved corpse is kept in a refrigerated viewing chamber at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano, Italy.
