Brrrrrr!
Where are the
COLD PLACES?
Cold Places
From the Athropolis Story...
XThe children looked around the icy room. Everything was made of shining ice - the walls, the floors, the chairs, the table - everything!

ARCTIC LIBRARY
Check out the COLD / COLD PLACES, COUNTRIES & PLACES and EURASIA sections. There's just about everything in this library that you'd ever need to know about the Arctic, listed both ALPHABETICALLY and by CATEGORY. Ideal for students. (Double-click any word on these pages for a "pop-up" definition.)

ARCTIC MAPS AND DAILY WEATHER REPORTS
Maps and pop-up current weather reports for locations throughout the Arctic area.

GAME: COLD PLACES
Guess the places that are either partially or completely within the Arctic Circle (towns, cities, countries, territories or bodies of water).

GAME: KNOW YOUR ARCTIC COUNTRIES
Each country listed in the game below has a portion of its land mass within the Arctic Circle

GAME: THE NUNAVUT GAME
Nunavut - "our land" in the Inuktitut language - has been home to Inuit for millennia and part of Canada for more than a century. Guess the locations that are within Nunavut.

HARBIN ICE LANTERN AND SCULPTURE FESTIVAL
Among the Ice People of Manchuria. Some photos of ice structures and sculptures.

ICE HOTEL IN JUKKASJÄRVI
The world´s largest igloo, the celebrated ICE HOTEL is built every year in the heart of Swedish Lapland. (Also see: Athropolis NEWS)
A visitor's pictures of the Ice Hotel.

BUILDING AN IGLOO (1)
Provided temperatures remain below freezing, constructing snow shelters is relatively easy. Sheltering from the wind is the first priority, since the wind can drastically decrease the air temperature.

BUILDING AN IGLOO (2)
Provided temperatures remain below 32 degrees F, constructing snow shelters is relatively easy.

BUILDING A SNOW CAVE
A snow cave can mean the difference between life and death during a storm, but digging one requires not just know-how but the right conditions.

SLED DOGS - AN ALASKAN EPIC
Dogsledding 101, the making of a sled dog, the true story of Balto, and more.

DOGSLED RACING
The site of the Iditarod. Check out the Kids Zone section.

DIVING UNDER ANTARCTIC ICE
The National Science Foundation Office of Polar Programs sponsored an underwater photography team to dive out of the US Antarctic Program's base at McMurdo Station, on Ross Island in Antarctica. Great photos!

ARCTIC SURVIVAL
Do fabrics differ in their ability to keep the wearer warm and dry? Which is more important in frigid temperatures--keeping dry or staying warm?

ARCTIC NUTRITION
How do Arctic explorers get the energy they need to complete an expedition? Do some foods supply more energy than others?

HOW TO AVOID FROSTBITE
Don't forget this fact: once the temperatures drop below 32 degrees F (0 degrees C), you're in the frostbite zone!

WHY IS IT HARD TO START A CAR IN THE WINTER
This can be a big problem for people who live up north. There are three main reasons...

GLOBAL MEASURED EXTREMES OF TEMPERATURE AND PRECIPITATION
Check out the "Lowest Temperatures" section. Wow! That's cold!

WHY DO THEY USE SALT TO MELT ICE ON ROADS?
Salt lowers the melting/freezing point of water. learn more...

HOW REFRIGERATORS WORK
Every 15 minutes or so you hear the motor turn on and it magically keeps things cold. Why?

WHAT'S THE IDEAL TEMPERATURE FOR A REFRIGERATOR?
The purpose of a refrigerator is to slow down the growth of bacteria. The purpose of a freezer is to stop bacteria completely by freezing them solid.

DRY ICE?
Dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide. A block of dry ice has a surface temperature of -109.3 degrees F or -78 degrees C. Now that's COLD!

WORLD TEMPERATURE EXTREMES
How would you like to be in a place that was -89.2 C / -128.6 F in July?

TEMPERATURE CONVERSIONS AND WIND CHILL
Convert between Celsius/Centigrade and Fahrenheit and (for you scientist types) Kelvin. You can also calculate the wind chill factor if you know how fast the wind is blowing.

ENVIRONMENT CANADA'S WIND CHILL PROGRAM
Everything you'll ever need to know about wind chill is here: information, calculators, forecasts...

COLLAPSING ICE SHELVES
It took less than a month for a massive ice shelf to break up off the coast of Antactica. Five hundred billion tons of ice sheet has now become billions of tons of icebergs.

COLD DESERTS OF THE WORLD
The main form of precipitation in a cold desert is snow or fog - but only ten inches or less per year.

TUNDRA
The tundra biome is at the top of the world -- around the North Pole! Below a thin layer of tundra soil is its permafrost, a permanently frozen layer of ground.

LIFE ON A RUSSIAN NORTH POLE DRIFTING STATION
Of all Russian scientific programs in the Arctic, the North Pole Drifting Station program ranks among the most valuable to today's polar researchers.

VOSTOK STATION
Vostok is operated as a permanent Antarctic station by the Russian Federation and carries out a wide range of scientific activities. It is also known as the coldest place on earth.

NORTH GREENLAND ICE CORE PROJECT
In the middle of the Greenland ice cap at a height of about 3000 meters / 9800 feet, the project camp is located at 75,1 N and 42,3 W. The closest airports are at Kangerlussuaq (951 km / 590 miles), Illulissat (722 km / 448 miles) and Thule Air Base (733 km / 455 miles). This is a cold place!

SLED DOG CENTRAL
Oh, just about everything you'd want to know about sled dogs!

HOW TO MAKE PAPER SNOWFLAKES
They're simple and fun.

FROSTBITE
Frostbite is, literally, frozen body tissue - usually skin but sometimes deeper - and must be handled carefully to prevent permanent tissue damage or loss.

PERMAFROST
Some good information about frozen ground and how it effects things like pipelines.

PERMAFROST - TEACHER'S GUIDE AND EXPERIMENTS
Permafrost underlies an estimated 20%-25% of the world's land surface; it occurs in more than 50% of Russia and Canada, 82% of Alaska, 20% of China, and probably all of Antarctica.

CAN HOT WATER FREEZE FASTER THAN COLD?
Yes. Here's an explanation.
