Thinning Ice in the Arctic!
A Squallhoot asks,
"What are we going to do?"
Thinning ice in the Hudson Bay area of Canada will doom the population of polar bears in about 40 years if something isn't done to stop the climate from getting warmer. The ice cap is shrinking and the seasonal cycle of ice might disappear because of rising temperatures. If that happens, it's all over for the poor old bears.

The polar bears live in the southernmost part of the Arctic and would be the first victims of a warming trend that is already threatening ecosystems, food sources, and the traditional way of life of the Inuit.

Changing weather patterns are also threatening some rare caribou. In other areas the seals have disappeared - no ice floes, no seals.

Changes to the climate have also brought electrical storms that were unknown in the Arctic. Animals don't know what to do because they have never seen lightning or heard thunder before. What would you think if you saw an electrical storm for the first time?

People who live in many northern communities may also have to move. If the permafrost (which keeps the Arctic soil permanently frozen) melts - their houses could fall over!
