How Many Words for Snow? For thousands of years, indigenous Arctic peoples lived in harmony with their environment, and a lifetime was spent learning the nuances of the land and sea - skills essential for survival in a world of ice and snow. It is therefore not surprising that the Inuit, Aivilik and Igloolik languages have over 30 words for snow. For example:
Aniuk : Snow for drinking water.
